ROTC
Programs

JROTC began at Kemper in 1968.
Kemper’s JROTC unit is and has been since the inception of the
award an Honor Unit With Distinction, the highest rating
available. JROTC is a citizenship and leadership development
program that was created by the National Defense Act of 1916. It
is currently offered in more than 1400 high schools throughout the
United States and overseas.
JROTC is a cooperative program
between the local school and the U.S. Army where retired Army
personnel provide leadership training focusing on decision-making,
problem-solving, teamwork, responsibility, communications and
values. It is not a recruiting program for the Armed Forces. While
many JROTC cadets choose to enter the military services, equal or
greater numbers do not.
JROTC stresses the value of
education and staying in school. It promotes high school
completion, preparation for the world of work, and advancement to
secondary education. Information is made available on scholarship
programs offered by the military services.
JROTC has a standardized
curriculum nationwide which includes a variety of academic
subjects, such as Leadership, Citizenship, Communications, First
Aid, Map Reading, History, Technology Awareness and many others.
Additionally, JROTC emphasizes physical fitness and provides
opportunities for Cadets to participate in the Cadet Challenge
Physical Fitness test.
JROTC offers opportunities for
school and community support activities, parades, honor guard,
color guard, rifle team, drill team and competition with other
JROTC units.
JROTC also offers a one-week
summer camp, normally held in June at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.
At summer camp, cadets from across the Midwest can experience
adventure training activities such as river rafting, rappelling,
confidence courses, and similar activities, all designed to
provide opportunities for achievement and character-building.
JROTC cadets are rewarded for
their accomplishments with ribbons, medals, and certificates. This
truly allows cadets to “wear their pride on their chests.”
